Video Project: Island
This project started in 2003 with a series of paintings and videos related to the Azorean landscape and ended with the Island Project website which combines the videos with all the archived material I had gathered in making them.
The Azores Islands lie along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in the triple junction region between the North American, Eurasian and African tectonic plates.
It is naturally an unstable location. The last active volcano was Capelinhos, which erupted off the coast of Faial island in September 1957 and
remained active until October 1958. We were living on the neighboring island of Pico that year when my mother and her brother took a boat to Faial
to record the volcano on an 8mm home movie camera. In making this series of videos I relied, for source material, on those movies as well as others
shot by Alzira Simas between 1954-1958. Sources for sound include cassette tapes made by Padre José M. Neves between 1973-1975.
The website island.isabelmar.com includes a series of videos that I mixed using archival footage of the Capelinhos Volcano and various other film, video and sound. There is a souces section with these archives. In English and Portuguese.
Este projeto tenta ligar a dinâmica geológica e humana que caracteriza a sociedade açoriana em geral. Por um lado, temos o vulcão como força destructiva da Natureza, capaz de aterrorizar e destruir qualquer ser humano. E por outro lado, a vida continua, as pessoas juntam-se e adaptam-se a essa nova realidade, e acabam por apostar na entre-ajuda que a sobrevivência exige, e na esperança que a emigração representa. Nas palavras do Vitorino Nemésio sobre açorianidade:
Estou muito interessada em perceber melhor a psíque açoriana que, a meu ver, mistura fatalismo e medos terríveis, com uma capacidade incrível para sentir esperança, felicidade e calor humano. Acho que esta psíque resulta directamente da condição física destas ilhas vulcânicas – os perigos avassaladores e sempre-presentes (terramotos, erupções e explosões) que criaram estas ilhas e as suas incríveis belezas, e o vasto e mutável oceano. Ao ver as imagens filmadas por minha mãe e meu tio durante a nossa visita ao Pico em 1957-58 (ano que coincidiu com a actividade do Vulcão) não posso deixar de pensar que, para a Natureza, a destruição é criação, a morte, vida."Para nós geografia vale outro tanto como a história.
Como as sereias temos uma dupla natureza: somos de carne e pedra.

While working on this project I got a call from one of the producers on the Travel Channel's Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. Someone had noticed the archival footage I posted of the islands and volcano and wanted permission to use some of it in their upcoming episode on the Azores. A few clips (one of my father arriving on a boat) ended up on Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, Azores (aired Jan 26, 2009) attributed to my mother and uncle who shot the footage in 1957-58. itunes download.
